a literary magazine layout in a browser usually fails. either the columns collapse on a phone and the magic disappears, or they hold and the phone becomes unreadable. quill solves this by treating wide screens and narrow screens as different products built from the same content.
on desktop you get the spread. two columns of body, a kicker in the gutter, footnotes at the bottom of the page, images placed deliberately. on mobile you get a clean reading view, single column, footnotes inline, images right where the body calls them.
issue archives display as covers. each issue gets a real landing page with a table of contents. the editorial team gets a roster page. it is a small system, all of which the writer of the magazine can run.
